Humidity Tells Only Part of the Story
Relative humidity changes as temperature changes. Air that appears manageable while warm can reach a much higher relative humidity as the room cools overnight. This is why condensation often appears in the morning even when the previous evening’s reading did not look alarming.
Dense foliage creates its own humid pocket. A sensor hanging near the tent roof may not reflect conditions between overlapping leaves. Keep plants spaced, remove dead material and allow air to pass through the canopy.
Young plants can dry quickly in very low humidity, while mature, crowded plants release more moisture. There is no single setting for every stage. Observe the crop, watch the room surfaces and respond to the full picture.
Ventilation Must Replace the Air, Not Merely Stir It
A circulation fan moves air around the plants. An extractor removes stale air from an enclosed space. They do related but different jobs.
In a small open shelf setup, room ventilation and a gentle fan may be sufficient. A closed tent normally needs an intake route and a way to exhaust warm, humid air. The outgoing air must go somewhere appropriate. Venting it into an already damp cupboard simply relocates the moisture.
Fan size should match the space and the resistance created by ducting, bends and filters. Long ducts with several sharp turns reduce airflow. Shorter, smoother routes are generally easier to manage and quieter too.
The leaves should move lightly. Constant aggressive wind can dry their edges and make young stems struggle. An oscillating fan or indirect position often gives broader circulation without blasting one plant all day.
Use the Light Schedule to Your Advantage
Some growers operate their lights during colder hours so the heat produced helps balance the night-time temperature. This can be practical, but the schedule must still suit the plants and the household.
Consider noise, light spill and electricity tariffs alongside temperature. A bright tent in a bedroom may disrupt sleep even if running overnight is thermally convenient. Timers should be reliable, correctly rated and kept away from wet floors.
Once a schedule is chosen, keep it consistent. Plants respond better to a dependable rhythm than to lights being switched on whenever someone remembers. Check the timer after a power cut or clock change rather than assuming it resumed correctly.
Condensation Is a Building Warning Too
Moisture on windows, walls or the underside of a roof should not be dismissed as a gardening nuisance. Persistent condensation can affect paint, plaster, timber and stored belongings. It may also signal that the space is not exchanging enough air.
Wipe away visible moisture, but find the cause. Possible contributors include wet runoff left in trays, an uncovered reservoir, too many plants in a small room, poor extraction or a large temperature drop after the lights turn off.
Avoid drying ordinary household laundry in the same enclosed room. The extra moisture can make environmental control much harder. Check hidden corners behind tents and shelves, since cold outside walls may collect condensation before it becomes obvious elsewhere.
Watering Usually Slows in Winter
Plants do not drink according to the calendar. Cooler roots, slower growth and reduced evaporation can leave pots wet for longer. Watering on the same schedule used in July may keep the medium saturated through January.
Check the pot’s weight and the moisture below the surface. The top can appear dry while the lower root zone remains wet. Empty runoff rather than letting containers stand in it.
Fungus gnats, yellow lower leaves and a stale smell around the growing medium can point towards persistent wetness, though each symptom has other possible causes. Make a small adjustment and watch the response before reaching for several treatments at once.
Build a Five-Minute Winter Check
A quick daily inspection should include the following:
- Look at the current, minimum and maximum temperature.
- Check humidity and search for condensation.
- Confirm that intake, extraction and circulation fans are operating.
- Inspect leaves from above and below.
- Lift pots or check the growing medium before watering.
- Make sure cables, plugs and timers remain dry and secure.
Once a week, clean fan guards, remove dead foliage and inspect the area behind the setup. Dust gradually reduces airflow, while fallen plant matter gives pests and mould somewhere to establish.
